How to Clean and Disinfect Your Home During COVID-19

by Matt Jensen - April 20, 2020

While the origin of the coronavirus is still under speculation, the first cluster of this virus formed in China’s province of Hubei. This highly contagious virus then went on to spread throughout China and the rest of the world. Over 120 countries have been infected with COVID-19, with Iran, Italy, China, UK, and the United States being some of the worst hit countries.

This virus spreads through physical contact and airborne particles that are released when infected individuals cough. Some people are said to be carriers of the virus, which means that they don’t show symptoms, yet are spreading it. It’s therefore essential to stay indoors and maintain strict sanitation to protect yourself and your family from contracting this virus.

Research has found that the coronavirus persists on surfaces for days. This virus is alive and contagious on stainless steel for 3 days and on plastic and glass for 9 days, which is why disinfecting is of utmost importance right now.

Our experts shed light on the best way to keep your home clean and virus-free during this time:

Wear disposable gloves when cleaning

With COVID-19, you have to be wary of cross-contamination. It’s therefore, advisable to use gloves when cleaning your home. Wearing gloves ensures you won’t touch your face too. Once you are done cleaning and disinfecting your home, dispose the gloves. Make sure you’re taking them off inside out to prevent further contamination.

Use disinfectants

It’s essential to disinfect your home as best you can during this time. Since the virus can stay alive on surfaces for many days, it’s essential every surface is disinfected, especially when you get home after a walk or after getting groceries.

Disinfectants that are effective include bleach (chlorinated and non-chlorinated), isopropyl alcohol (70% and above), and ammonia. Prepare a solution and store it in spray bottles so that you can disinfect surfaces easily and any packages that are delivered.

If you prefer to buy a disinfectant off-the-shelf, opt for and EPA registered one.

Cleaning electronics

Your home’s electronics too need to be cleaned to ensure no bacteria is left on them. Cellphones are the particularly exposed to all kinds of bacteria. While you can’t use a disinfectant spray on the electronics in your home, you can still use disinfecting wipes. Alcohol-based wipes work the best for electronics.

Laundry

Part of the safety protocol for COVID-19 is that you immediately wash the clothes when you get back home. Make it a point to wash other linens regularly like towels, bedding, etc.

Wash these clothes on a warm water setting to ensure they are disinfected.
