Clever storage
Minimise dust be storing brooms handle down in cupboards or rooms. This will protect the bristles and keep the dust off the floor.
Lampshades – a dust-free zone
Clothes lint rollers double up as brilliant cleaners for lampshades, so that when you switch the light on, you won’t cringe at the sight of all that dust.
Microwaves
The best way to keep a microwave clean (and preserve its life) is to do the job at least once a week. This stops the build-up of mess, stains and smells. Fill a bowl with half water half distilled white vinegar and microwave on high for a minute or so. Then, use a clean cloth to wipe around all the surfaces and dry carefully.
Be cautious when you remove the bowl from the microwave because it will be hot.
Sanitize toys
Sticking with the vinegar—such a useful household item—you can sanitize your kids’ plastic toys by running them through a dishwasher cycle. Use vinegar instead of the dish soap.
Ceiling corners
Ceiling corners can look a little neglected and gather cobwebs and dust. Fasten an old towel around a broom with an elastic band and use as an extended feather duster.
Mattress cleaning
While mattresses at home are not the horror show those in hotels can be, they are still a neglected item. Next time you strip the bed, sprinkle the mattress with baking soda. Allow it to settle them for 15-20 minutes and then vacuum it off. Clean and deodorised at the same time.
Toasters
Thanks to frequent handling, toasters can quickly look grubby. Mix cream of tartar with a few drops of water, rub onto the surface gently and wipe off with a clean sponge, and you’ll give the stainless steel surface its gleam back.
