The Fall Clean is a thing—the ideal time to clear the clutter and decks before winters sets in. Read on for our top tips on simple cleaning hacks that will work a treat (keep those lemons handy!)

Freshen up garbage disposal with lemons

Urgh, the trash can often stinks to high heaven. But lemons are your friend. Add two or three cut up lemons, salt and ice to the can, shoogle around and leave for a while. This will freshen up the can nicely.

Use denture tablets for your kettle

A coffee maker can quickly build up dirt. Denture tablets dissolved in water will clean it up. Put them where the water goes and run two cycles through the machine for best effects.

Disinfect your keyboard with vinegar

Now that so many people are working from home, those keyboards are getting much more of a bashing. To keep them clean, never eat at your desk (you don’t do that anyway, right?!) and use a toothbrush and vinegar.

Dip the brush in a half vinegar half water solution and scrub on and between the keys to remove bacteria and dirt.

… and keep hold of that vinegar for your coffee machine

Yes, once a month you should fill the coffee-maker’s reservoir with four tablespoons of vinegar mixed with water. Run the machine, then run it again with only water to banish the vinegar smell.

Use potatoes for stuck on food

The humble potato, as well as being delicious to eat, doubles up as scourer for cast iron. Put coarse salt onto the cast-iron pan and rub with a halved potato. This will shift the mess and avoids the use of soap. Cast iron hates soap because it’s so damaging.

Clean your blender easily

Pour warm water, baking soda and washing-up liquid in the blender and blend. Rinse with clean water. Done!

Clean wooden chopping boards with lemons

Lemons are brilliant for cleaning—acidic and all-natural. Wooden chopping boards should not be placed in the dishwasher but it can be difficult to get them properly clean by hand. Leave coarse salt to sit on the surface of the chopping board for a few minutes then rub with halved lemon. This should shift stubborn stains.
