Goodbye, Germs! 5 Tips for Disinfecting After Illness

by Matt Jensen - June 4, 2020

Contagious diseases like the common cold, flu and COVID-19 are airborne and can live on hard surfaces for several hours. Therefore, it’s essential to disinfect all areas of your home to prevent these illnesses from spreading after someone’s been infected.

Here’s how you can bid farewell to the germs at your home:

1. Disinfect the bedding

A sick person would spend most of their time resting in bed. The first step to disinfect your home is washing the infected bed linens, including the sheets and pillowcases. Throw the contaminated clothes in the laundry too.

Make sure you’re handling all the infected items only after putting on rubber gloves. If the sick person had COVID-19, wear face masks and PPE as well.

2. Wipe down frequently touched items

Often-touched items such as phones, light switches, remote controls, doorknobs, and handles should be cleaned twice every day when someone is sick at your home. Wipe them down thoroughly after the worst is over to ensure the germs are laid to rest.

3. Disinfect the bathroom

The germs emitted through diarrhea or vomiting can lurk in the deepest and darkest corners of your bathroom. Use a disinfectant to clean these areas of your bathroom:

  • Sinks and faucets
  • Toilet lids, flushing handles, and seats
  • Trash cans
  • Bathroom floors and walls
  • Light switches

It’s also a good idea to throw out the contaminated toothbrush and toiletries after the person has recovered.

4. Wash the infected utensils

To stop the spread of infectious diseases, make sure that you’ve limited the sick person’s use of kitchen utensils. After every use, wash the items at high heat in an automatic dishwasher. But if you’re handwashing them, dip them in a solution of chlorine bleach and water to kill the harmful organisms.

5. Sanitize your car

The frequent visits to the doctor can leave unwanted germs in your car. These may spread the illness to other family members. To sanitize your vehicle, wipe or spray every nook and corner with a disinfectant.

After taking a trip, make sure to wipe down the steering wheel, dashboard controls, keys, and door handles. Also, remember to wash the seat covers!
