Five Eco-Friendly Ways to Clean Your Home

by budget-maids® - February 26, 2019

Bleach and other strong chemicals are often used in cleaning products. The cleaning service in Vienna we run uses eco-friendly products for all our house cleaning services, and we have some expert tips to help you maintain that green vibe.

Here are our five eco-friendly ways to clean your home:

Buy eco-friendly products

Eco-friendly cleaning solutions have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. They’re much better than they used to be. Choose an all-purpose product if you can as this will cut down on waste plastic. You can read more about the products we use for our cleaning service in Vienna here.

However, it is helpful to accept that products with less chemicals will not clean the same way. They won’t work as quickly. On the other hand, you won’t be exposed to lots of toxins. Win win!

Make your own

Lemons – loads of uses!

Lemon juice, baking soda and distilled malt vinegar are all stalwarts of the home-made cleaning solutions world. They save you money and do little, if any, damage to the water system and marine life. You can find some great ideas on using vinegar here.

Choose natural air fresheners

Commercial air-fresheners such as sprays, plug-ins and scented candles often contain lots of chemicals which then circulate in the air around you. They can prove particularly problematic if anyone in your household has a respiratory condition. Opening windows is one obvious way to freshen the air. But you can also use distillers that burn essential oils. Our cleaners often put freshly-ground coffee in the bottom of a trash bag to minimize trash can smells.

Ditch the furniture polish

Commercial furniture polish can contain lots of nasties, such as petroleum distillates and solvents. There is an easy home-made solution—salad dressing! We know it sounds bonkers but the combination of oil and acid in a dressing will clean furniture beautifully. The formula is two parts oil to one part lemon juice. Add water and mix in a spray bottle. Spray on your tables and rub well with a lint-free cloth for shine.

Live smaller

If you compare house sizes around the world, as shrinkthatfootprint does, you will see that while Americans don’t have the biggest average, it is still a lot bigger than many countries. A smaller home does not need as much heating and electricity, or cleaning. Could you downsize?

Here at Budget Maids we provide cleaning services in Vienna, a maid service in Arlington or cleaning services in Columbia and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you clean your home in an environmentally-friendly way?
