Are your valuables missing? 3 Ways To Tell If Your Cleaning Maid is Snooping Around In Your Things

by Matt Jensen - August 31, 2020

Homemakers are most apprehensive about hiring cleaning help for their house because they can’t trust an outsider. While some are control freaks who can’t allow others to enter their territory, others don’t trust their home with a stranger.

If you’re worried that your cleaning maid is snooping around in your things, here are some clear signs for it.

Things Aren’t in Their Proper Place

Everybody has a way of arranging perfumes on their dresser, condiments on the dining table, knives in the kitchen, and clothes in the wardrobe. While others may not notice the subtle differences when someone messes with the arrangement, a homemaker always does. This is also the first sign of an unreliable cleaning maid if you find your things aren’t in their proper place.

You may hire help to clean the house, but it’s important to set some ground rules. For instance, some homemakers don’t like maids handling their essentials; others don’t want an interruption in the kitchen. However, if you notice that things aren’t as they’re supposed to be, you have every right to question your cleaning maid. Even if items aren’t missing, it’s still wrong of them to invade your privacy if they’re specifically told not to snoop around in your things.

Supplies Are Running Out Faster

If you suspect a food thief in the house, check your fridge and pantry first. Missing loaves of bread, empty jam bottles, fewer milk cartons, and vanished cheese are clear signs that someone is snacking on your food supplies behind your back. However, before pointing fingers at your helper, ask your kids. It’s highly likely that your little ones are emptying the fridge to satiate late-night hunger pangs.

Once you’re sure it’s none of the family members, ask your cleaning help. If they’re honest about taking food without permission, you can politely tell them not to repeat the same mistake. But if you suspect they’re lying, you can alert the company which referred them to you.

Things Are Missing Frequently

This is a significant red flag that you must not ignore. It’s tolerable to have things set in a different order than how you prefer or have your help share food if they’re hungry. But it’s utterly impermissible for them to steal things from your possession. You must keep track of all the misplaced things while an outsider is coming to clean the house. List the items that are most valuable and check on them every day.

Inform and enquire your cleaning maid about things that you can’t find in the house and request them to find them for you. This is an indirect warning to suspicious helpers that you’re watching and will take strict action if the items are found in their possession.

However, don’t rule out the possibility that you could’ve lost your things yourself and are forgetting the instance when it happened. Handle the matter maturely but don’t tolerate criminal behavior.
