Yes, Netflix’s new surprise hit—Tidying Up with Marie Kondo—has attracted plenty of fans who want to watch her go into people’s homes (and their lives) and improve them via the medium of tidying and de-cluttering.

Store things vertically
If you want to find everything easily, the best way Ms Kondo advises, is to store items vertically. This takes up less space and means everything is easy to locate and remove or return.
De-clutter, de-clutter, de-clutter
Marie encourages de-cluttering. Her popular phrase is to ask if an item sparks joy—if it doesn’t, she advises you to throw stuff out. Where this might feel problematic is gifts. Christmas, birthday, wedding and anniversary gifts all come under this umbrella. You love the person; you hate their gift. Most people will not notice the absence of your gift. If they do, a ready-made reason—a friend of mine saw it and loved it so much, I had to pass it on, might suffice.
Learn how to fold

Do not keep more than 30 books
Arguably, this is Ms Kondo’s most controversial statement. Book lovers all over the world rose up in arms at the idea of books as “clutter”. But like most extreme statements, there’s a grain of truth there. Do you need all those books? What about the cheap paperback you bought at the airport before your vacation? Or the novel you started and couldn’t finish? The Spanish textbook you purchased in a fit of self-improvement enthusiasm?
Reward yourself
If you always have an incentive waiting for the end of your de-clutter/tidy up session, then your mind associates the task with reward. Your reward is individual. You might find the whole process of cleaning and tidying cathartic anyway.
