4 tech gadgets you SHOULD be cleaning

by budget-maids® - October 31, 2020

Thirty years ago, TVs and stereos were the limits to the ‘tech’ you needed to clean. Fast forward to 2020 and it’s a very different ball game.

Tablets, phones, activity trackers—we’ve all got tech we use all the time. Picking them up. Putting them down. Plugging stuff in. it’s easy for all your gear to pick up grimes and germs.

Fear not! We’ve come up with the top tips to help you keep your tech clean and the tools you should use to clean them.

Headphones

If you use in-ear headphones they will need regular cleaning—especially if that’s how you entertain yourself while out for a run or in the gym. Most people’s earbuds look revolting close up. Oil, wax and sweat will build up on them, which can impair the performance.

If your ear buds have silicone covering, remove them carefully and wash in warm water with a little liquid soap in it. You can also use a clean cloth or cotton bud to clean them. Leave them to dry out thoroughly before popping them back on.

For foam earpads, wipe with a clean damp cloth. Do not use soapy water.

If the cable is dirty, wipe with a cloth dipped in warm soapy water and dry.

Smartphones and tablets

The best cleaning product for smartphone and tablets is a dry microfiber cloth. Wipe in a circular motion to prevent scratching. Smartphones and tablets are delicate so window cleaning solutions and sprays should not be used.

You can purchase specialist cloths to use on the screens that get rid of bacteria. Phones are handled extensively, so it’s safest to make sure you are cleaning them with a product that will banish any pesky germs and keep you safe.

Laptops

With the increase in the number of people working from home thanks to the global pandemic, laptops are being used more than ever. For the lid and casing, use a microfiber cloth and wipe gently in a circular motion. If there are any marks on the lid, dampen the cloth and wring it out before applying.

For your keyboard, a can of compressed air will get rid of dirt and crumbs. (Though we advise against eating at your laptop, PC or Mac for health and safety reasons.) Again, you can buy specialist wipes for keyboards to clean them.

Activity tracker

If you wear your fitness watch most of the time, it probably gets sweaty and even a bit smelly.

To clean it, use a cloth that has been dipped in warm soapy water and run out and slide it down the straps of the tracker, making sure you avoid the tracking element itself. For the buckle, a dampened cotton bud can be used on the stem to clean that.
