4 Cleaning Hacks That Aren’t Worth Trying

by Matt Jensen - April 15, 2019

The number of internet bloggers in the United States is constantly rising and is expected to reach 31.7 million by the end of next year, i.e. 2020. Out of this huge number, a big chunk includes lifestyle bloggers who introduce innovative life hacks to the internet regularly through their posts.

Their goal, of course, is to make daily tasks easier for you. But when it comes to cleaning hacks, more often than not, these time and energy saving tips have the exact opposite results.

To spare you the trouble of dealing with the consequences of a hack gone wrong, we’ve compiled a list of cleaning hacks that are better left not done.

1. Mixing Vinegar and Baking Soda as an All-Purpose Cleaner

While vinegar and baking soda are effective cleaners separately, together they are nothing more than just a salty solution. As vinegar is acidic in nature and baking soda is basic, they cancel each other out chemically when combined together. Therefore, you’re just wiping your counter with water, not a magic cleaner!

2. Using Coca-Cola to Clean the Toilet Bowl

Legend has it if you pour soda down your toilet, let it soak and then scrub, you can remove hard water stains in no time! Is it worth a try?

Not really.

Carbonated drinks contain a small amount of acid that does help in getting rid of rust and stains, but it takes a really long time. Soda also doesn’t do anything to kill the germs and bacteria in the toilet. Instead, it becomes a source of food for them. Rather than wasting soda to clean your toilet, it’s better to just stick to disinfecting toilet cleaners.

3. Adding Extra Detergent for Cleaner Laundry

Washing clothes with more detergent than required doesn’t make them cleaner. Instead, it becomes difficult to rinse it out and the residue makes the clothes sticky. Therefore, when setting up the washer, make sure you use the measurement of the detergent mentioned in the directions.

4. Sanitizing Sponges in the Microwave

This hack claims that you can get rid of all the bacteria on your sponges by heating them up in the microwave. Researchers argue that doing so has no benefits, as in reality, by the time your microwave will reach the temperature required to kill the bacteria your sponge will probably be on fire.
